Eldorado National Forest

Eldorado National Forest California

Eldorado National Forest Overview

The Eldorado National Forest is located in the central Sierra Nevada mountain range and encompasses 786,994 acres ranging in elevation from 1,000 to 10,000 feet. The mountainous topography is broken by the steep canyons of the Mokelumne, Cosumnes, American, and Rubicon rivers.  It’s also home to about 300 lakes and reservoirs.

Thousands of people visit each year to enjoy the rivers, lakes and streams. Outdoor recreation includes camping, boating, kayaking, fishing, swimming, water sports, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing.  Alpine and nordic skiing are also popular during the winter.  Four hundred miles of hiking trails pass through all kinds of terrain, from gentle oak foothills on the west to the 10,000-foot crest of the Sierra Nevada.

The Eldorado National Forest is also near the original California gold discovery site on the American River at Coloma.
