Cave Campground Lassen National Forest California

Cave Overview

Cave Campground 013

Cave Campground has 45 first-come first-served campsites and is located next to beautiful Hat Creek in the Lassen National Forest. It’s also across the highway from Subway Cave (lava tubes).

The well-maintained campground has spacious campsites that can accommodate tents, trailers and RV.  Some sites are along the highway. Campsites 32, 33 and 38 are double-family (mini-group) sites.  Each site has a paved parking spur, table, fire ring and grill. Hookups are not available.

Campground amenities include potable (drinking) water, vault toilets, overflow parking and trash collection. Firewood is also available to purchase from the friendly camp host (site #18). Cell service is not available in the area.

Cave Creek Campground – Area Recreation & Activities

There’s some mighty fine fishing in the area. Some say the best in all of the Lassen National Forest. Other fun activities include hiking, mountain biking, spelunking, OHV trail riding, hunting, picnicking and wildlife viewing.  Lassen Volcanic National Park entrance is also about 15 miles away. You can also learn more about hiking trails in the area and other information at the Old Station Visitor Center.

You should also check out Subway Cave. The parking area is about 1/4 mile from the campground and then a short hike to the entrance. It was formed approximately 20,000 to 24,000 years ago when molten basaltic lava from the nearby Hat Creek eruption flowed northward. The surface cooled and hardened into a crust, while the molten lava beneath drained away, leaving a hollow lava tube.

Other campgrounds in the area include Hat Creek, Bridge and Rocky.
