Indian Cove Campground Joshua Tree National Park California

Indian Cove Overview

Indian Cove Campground 073

Indian Cove is one of the largest campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park with 100 campsites set among a wonderland of massive granite boulders.  Group (tent) camping is also available.

Many campsites are best for tent camping but there are some that can accommodate smaller trailers and RVs. Each campsite has a gravel parking spur (ranging in length from 18 to 31 feet), table, fire ring and grill.

The campground is open year round. Amenities include vault toilets and trash collection. Potable (drinking) water is not available so bring your own. You can also fill up at the ranger station. Cell service is poor. Pets are okay (on leash) in the campground, but not on the trails.

  1. Daniel Anderson says:

Could you please explain the concrete water built behind campsite #25

    • Hi Daniel,
Good eye! That was built to form a catch-basin for rain water coming off the rocks. It probably serves to provide water for animals, as well as protect the campsite to a certain extent. It is currently dry.

  2. frank mclaughlin says:

does the reservation window for campsites open at 7:00am?

  3. Does anyone know if campsite 23 is still in operation despite not being listed on the map on recreation.gov?

Also, site 24 has a 2 vehicle maximum but based on the Google Street View I’m having a hard time picturing 2 vehicles fitting in the pullout and still being able to open doors, unpack, etc. Despite this, recreation.gov says that an 18ft RV is allowable equipment and that there is no overflow parking available. Is there something I’m missing about the parking situation?

  4. Don’t book sites 81-83 unless you’re okay with rude and entitled climbers walking through your campsite to climb moosedog tower (which the campsites are right up against) without saying anything all day long! ◡̈

  5. What would be good sites for a small camper, and are they level?

    • Hi Steve,
Many Indian Cove campsites are best for tent camping but there are some that can accommodate smaller trailers and RVs. Several also offer nice privacy (tucked among large boulders). I’m not sure how big your RV is, but here are some campsites to consider: #7 (25 feet long parking spur), #13 (22 feet), #21 (32 feet), #22 (35 feet), #25 (23 feet), #27 (24 feet), #35 (27 feet), #37 (21 feet), #43 (21 feet), #48 (24 feet), #53 (25 feet), #61 (28 feet) and #88 (21 feet). Most all sites at Indian Cove are level.
