Mid Hills Overview
Mid Hills Campground is very remote and offers 26 primitive campsites in the Mojave National Preserve. The campground offers extreme solitude, amazing stargazing, and beautiful views of the surrounding desert and Charleston Mountains. Â Amenities include vault toilets, but no water. Most campsites have a table, fire ring and grate. Cell service is not available in the area.
To reach the campground, you’ll travel on an 8 mile dirt road from Hole In The Wall campground. The drive will take you through a few washes, past the Gold Valley Ranch, and eventually to a spooky forest of burned pinion trees. The road is passable for most vehicles, but large RVs or trailers are not recommended.
The Hackberry Fire burned much of the vegetation back in 2005, but there are still  some nice pinyon and juniper trees that survived. Campsites 1-8 are in the burned area and sites 9 to 25 have more trees providing shade and shelter. Keep in mind, that an elevation of 5,600 feet, it will be cooler at Mid Hills during the night.
Area Recreation & Activities
Outdoor recreation in the area includes hiking, horseback riding, OHV exploring (designated roads only), picnicking, photography, stargazing and wildlife viewing.
Hole In The Wall Campground is about 8 miles from Mid Hills and has 36 campsites (water available). Black Canyon Equestrian & Group Campground is also near Hole In The Wall.

How do I find a layout map of the campground on your site

Unfortunately we’ve been unable to find a campground map for Mid Hills. Sorry about that.
Hi there. Mid Hills and Hole In The Wall are now all “reservable”. The way they set it up is that your reserve thru Rec.gov as usual. But they have a caveat. If a site is vacant with no pay-stub at a site when you get there, you can take an open site. They have put wi-fi in at HITW, so you take the open site, go to HITW, then use wi-fi to buy what you just claimed. It looks like they did away with the self-pay kisok on site. Seems crazy, don’t know how it will work. But we are going to MH in October, reservation in hand. Let you know what happens. 😸
