Amphitheater (Co) Campground Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Fore Colorado

Amphitheater (Co) Overview

Amphitheater 003

Perched on the side of a mountain above the historic town of Ouray (CO), Amphitheater Campground offers 35 campsites set among oaks and mixed confers. There is also a scenic overlook from the campground of Ouray and the “Amphitheater”.

The popular campground is best suited for tent camping and small trailers. Sites 32-35 are ‘walk-to’ tent sites (about 20 to 80 feet from parking area), and sites 26 and 27 (about 100 to 150 feet from parking area). Each site also has a table, lantern post fire ring and grill. RV’s can park in sites 3 to 15.

Campground amenities include drinking water, vault toilets and trash collection. You can also purchase firewood from the camp host. Cell service is fair in the area.

Other campgrounds in the area (15 to 17 miles) include Sunshine, South Mineral, Silver Jack, Mill Creek, Beaver Lake and Matterhorn.

Amphitheater – Area Recreation & Activities

We definitely recommend spending some time in the historic mining town of Ouray. It’s about 1/2 mile from the campground and offers a variety of shops, restaurants and also a public hot spring pool. There are also many historic (mining) sites in the area. Other activities include hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
