Cinder Hill Campground Campground Deschutes National Forest Oregon

Cinder Hill Campground Overview

Cinder Hill 026

Cinder Hill Campground has a 109 campsites (55 reservable), on the shores of East Lake in the caldera of Newberry Volcano. Several of the campsites are close to the beach and others are within walking distance. The campsites are great for tents, trailers and RVs (30 to 65 feet). Your camping fee pays for one vehicle, but you can also have a 2nd vehicle for an additional charge. Each also has a table, fire ring and grate. Amenities include drinking water and flush toilets. Firewood is also available for sale from the friendly camp host.

A restricted generator use policy is in affect for sites 52 – 110 to enhance visitor experience opportunities. Generators may only operate between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon and the hours of 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. daily.

Reservations are accepted for arrival between August 1 through September 29, and are released on a 6-month rolling basis. Click on the ‘Make A Reservation’ button to check availability.

Our favorite Cinder Hill campsites are: 18, 20, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 37, 45, 47, 56, 95, 97 and 101.

Cinder Hill Area Recreation

There’s tons of outdoor fun here including boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, photography and wildlife viewing. Remember to check out the Crater Rim Trail, perhaps one of the best high-country trails in the area.  Big Obsidian Flow trail is another nice 1-mile interpretive trail that takes you up and onto an impressive lava flow of 1300 year-old obsidian.  Lava Lands Visitor Center is also worth a visit. It’s located in nearby Bend, Oregon.

East Lake campground and Paulina Lake campground are also nearby.

17 Comments on “Cinder Hill Campground”

  1. Jeff Jones says:

Last year we were able to camp at Cinder Hill into the 2nd week of October, Is the campground closing after the labor day weekend this year, or does it become “first come” after Labor day?

  2. William long says:

Will cinder hill be open by the end of June

  3. Kenneth Fisher says:

Last year I reserved a camp site in July, why can’t I reserve one this year until August?

    • Hi Kenneth,
Campsites are available to reserve in August at Cinder Hill Campground in Oregon. Click on the ‘Make A Reservation’ button and you’ll be directed to the Cinder Hill reservation page on Recreation.gov. From there you can check availability and make a reservation.

  4. Mark Schulz says:

The gates open today. Is Cinder Hill open to walk ins until the tree clearing starts?

Also is there a projected date that reservations will open up for earlier than August 1st.

    • Hi Mark,
CampsitePhotos.com is not associated with the campgrounds listed on our site. We provide the photos of each campsite, camping info and links to make reservations. Cinder Hill campground is now open for walk-in camping. Reservations are take for arrivals Aug 1 through September 29. You can now check availability/make a reservation for campsite through Sep 29. Click on the “Make A Reservation” button to check availability.

  5. Teri Patty says:

I don’t see showers listed as one of the amenities. Are there showers available anywhere close-by?

    • Hi Teri,
Unfortunately Cinder Hill Campground does not have showers, nor does any of the campgrounds nearby (Paulina or East Lake). The East Lake Resort may have showers, but I doubt they are for public use.

  6. Stacy Claus says:

Is the campground open for first come first serve in late May or early June, even though it is not open for reservations? Thanks!
    Stacy

    • Hi Stacy,
Cinder Hill Campground generally doesn’t open until late May. Once open, campsites are first-come, first-serve up until Aug 1. Reservations are then accepted for arrivals between Aug 1 and Sep 29.

  7. Pam Fleming says:

I was just reading the previous reply to Stacy. My husband and I made a reservation for June 27-30 at Cinder Hill Campground. Will our campsite be reserved?

  8. Delia Craigberry says:

Are the campsites big enough for 2 tents? One bigger (but not hugungo) & one small/medium?

  9. Do you accomodate two vehicles per campsite?
