Driftwood – Deschutes Overview

Driftwood campground has 18 campsites in a forested area right along scenic Three Creek Lake in the Deschutes National Forest.  All campsites have nice views of the water.

The campground is seasonal and generally open mid June to late September (reservations accepted early July to late September. Amenities include vault toilets. Trash collection is not provided and potable (drinking) water is also not available.  Cell service is also non-existent. The town of Sisters is about 30mins away and offers many additional amenities.

Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site has a parking spur (ranging in length from 18 ft. to 40 ft.), table, fire ring and grill. There is a good amount of shade at this campground and at most sites. Some close by RV dump stations include 9th Street RV Storage Center (39mi east), Tumalo State Park (32mi east), LaPine State Park (64mi south), Redmond Public Works RV Dump (37mi northeast), and Expo Center RV Park (37mi northeast).

Driftwood – Area & Recreation

Driftwood Campground is in a glacial cirque below Tam McArthur Rim with an old growth forest surrounding it. The outlet stream from the lake flows northward and joins with 2 other streams to form Three Creek. The shoreline of Three Creek Lake varies from gentle slope to rocky cliff.

Some popular activities to do here are hiking, fishing, boating, as well as swimming. The campground is at the head of the Tam McArthur Trail. It is a short, reasonably easy hike that provides great views of The Sisters. The Three Sisters are volcanic peaks and are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th highest peaks in Oregon. The lake only allows for non-motor boating. This is the most popular method for fishing on the lake. There are also multiple places to do some bird watching as well as fish hatchery viewing nearby.

Also, there is around 1,600 miles of trails that within the Deschutes National Forest and the adjacent Ochoco National Forest. The Metolius-Windigo Trail, open to hikers, bikers and horses, is more than 100 miles in length. It begins near the Metolius River headwaters west of the town of Sisters. The Lava Lands Visitor Center as well as the Newberry National Volcanic Monument are awesome to visit in Bend. Also, people enjoy traveling the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, known as Oregon’s Highway in the Sky. It climbs into the clouds on a 66-mile drive through the Cascade Range, weaving past snowy peaks and alpine lakes.

Other campgrounds you might like are Three Creek Meadow Horse, Three Creek Lake, Soda Creek, Cold Spring, Sisters Creekside, Elk Lake, Little Fawn, as well as Scott Lake.
