Hard Rock – Area & Recreation

Hard Rock resides on the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains, where gorgeous, lush mountain landscapes are abundant. It sits just south of Cougar Reservoir, near where Balm & Hardy Creek feeds into the South Fork.

Some popular activities to do here and in the surrounding area are hiking, biking, as well as fishing. The river offers good catch-and-release fishing for wild redside and cutthroat trout. The Castle Rock Trail, McKenzie River National Recreation Trail, and O’Leary Ridge & Alpine Trails are great for hiking and biking. The Castle Rock Trail leads through a dense Douglas-fir forest to the top of Castle Rock. Once on top, hikers enjoy impressive views of the McKenzie River Valley below. Also, the Terwilliger (Cougar) Hot Springs Trail will lead you to some hot springs. In addition, the Cougar Reservoir offers great water sport opportunities including all kinds of boating.

Other campgrounds you might like are French Pete, Red Diamond Group, Cougar Crossing, Sunnyside, Slide Creek, Frissell Crossing, Roaring River Group, as well as McKenzie Bridge.
