Indian Henry Overview

Indian Henry Campground offers 86 campsites in a forested area alongside the Clackamas River in Oregon’s Mt. Hood National Forest. It offers a peaceful setting with easy river access. Also, thick ferns and ivy add privacy between spots. In addition, the campground sits in a mixed forest of Douglas fir and other evergreens. The campground is a great location for relaxation and a spectacular outdoor experience.

Indian Henry Campground is seasonal, typically open from late May until mid September. Amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, and a parking area. Also, there are accessible vault toilets, as well as an amphitheater and a campground host. There is some cell service.

Indian Henry Campground can accommodate tents, trailers, as well as RVs. Also, only 26 of the sites at Indian Henry Campground are by reservation only. These sites are labeled tent-only sites, but some may allow small trailers and RVs. The other 60 sites at this campground are first come first serve sites. All sites can have up to 6 guests. They allow for either 1 or 2 vehicles. The max vehicle length ranges from 20ft-30ft. Each site has picnic tables, fire rings and pits, as well as grills.

Indian Henry – Area & Recreation

Mt. Hood National Forest covers over a million acres in northwestern Oregon. It stretches from the Columbia River Gorge south to the Olallie Lake area. It surrounds Mt. Hood, the state’s tallest peak, and offers a mix of alpine terrain, dense forest, rivers, and lakes. The forest draws visitors year-round for hiking, camping, skiing, and fishing, all within an easy drive of Portland.

Recreation near Indian Henry is very strong. Some popular activities to do here include fishing, hiking, mountain biking, as well as whitewater rafting. The Clackamas River Trail begins at the upper end of the campground and stretches about 8 miles. It climbs roughly 450 feet and works well for hiking or mountain biking year-round. However, snow can cover it in winter. Anglers love this stretch of river too. Expect winter steelhead, spring chinook, and late-summer kokanee salmon. For more adventure, there is a great opportunity for whitewater rafting below the campground. The river offers 12.5 miles of Class III–IV rapids down to North Fork Reservoir.

For day trips, consider Bagby Hot Springs. It is a scenic soak, fed by natural hot springs deep in the forest. Surprise Lake, a small blue-green lake reachable by a steep climb, offers quiet, non-motorized fishing. Milo McIver State Park makes another great stop, with trails, a disc golf course, and river overlooks with mountain views.

Other campgrounds that you might like are Milo McIver State Park, Metzler Park, Rainbow, Ripplebrook, Lockaby, Armstrong, Hideaway Lake, and Kingfisher.
