Mt. Hood National Forest Overview

Mt. Hood National Forest covers approximately 1.1 million acres in north-central Oregon, stretching across the western slopes of the Cascade Range. The forest is anchored by iconic Mount Hood, Oregon’s highest peak at 11,249 feet. It is also one of the most visited national forests in the United States.

The National Forest features a dramatic mix of landscapes, ranging from lush, moss-covered old-growth forests at lower elevations to alpine meadows, glaciers, and volcanic terrain near Mount Hood’s summit. Dense stands of Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and cedar dominate the western side, while drier forests and open ridgelines appear to the east.

The forest has an abundance of rivers, waterfalls, and lakes. The headwaters of several major waterways—including tributaries of the Columbia River Gorge—originate within the forest.

Outdoor recreation includes hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, camping, fishing, boating, skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. Wildlife viewing is also spectacular with opportunities to see many forest creatures.  There are also hundreds of miles of trails wind through the forest, including a segment of the iconic Pacific Crest Trail. In winter, Mount Hood’s deep snowfall also supports several ski areas, making the forest a major destination for snow sports.
