Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests South Carolina

Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests Overview

Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests is named after Francis Marion,  a revolutionary war hero also known as the ‘Swamp Fox’. The National Forest encompasses about 263,904 acres in Charleston and Berkeley counties.

In 1989, the forest was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Hugo; only the young growth survived the storm and its aftermath. Today, most trees in the forest do not predate this hurricane.

Outdoor recreation includes camping, hiking, mountain biking, OHV trail riding, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, boating, kayaking, picnicking and wildlife viewing.

The Forest Service also administers wilderness areas, experimental forests, timber production, and protection and management of wildlife and the watershed.
