Hawk Campground Golden Gate National Recreation Area California

Hawk Overview

Hawk Campground View

Hawk Campground features just three walk-in tent campsites Perched high above Tennessee Valley in the scenic Marin Headlands. Its one of the most secluded and rewarding camping destinations within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This primitive, hike-in campground offers spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, rolling coastal hills, and the San Francisco Bay, making it a favorite destination for backpackers seeking a peaceful overnight adventure just minutes from the city.

Reaching Hawk Camp requires a strenuous uphill hike of approximately 2.5 miles from the Tennessee Valley Trailhead or about 3.5 miles from the Miwok Trailhead. Because the campground is accessible only on foot, it provides a quiet backcountry experience without the crowds typically found at drive-up campgrounds. The surrounding landscape is home to coastal scrub, Monterey cypress, native wildlife, and soaring birds of prey, while nearby trails lead to scenic destinations such as Tennessee Beach, Rodeo Beach, and the historic Point Bonita Lighthouse.

The campground is seasonal and generally open early March through November. Amenities include a vault toilet and that’s it. Campers must pack in all water and pack out all gear/trash.  Each site also has a tent pad, picnic table, and food storage locker.  Campfires are prohibited, although portable gas camp stoves are permitted. Cell service is not available.

You might also like Haypress Campground, also in Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
