Golden Gate National Recreation Area Overview

Golden Gate National Recreation Area is one of America’s most unique national park destinations, spanning more than 80,000 acres across the San Francisco Bay Area. Established in 1972, the park protects a remarkable collection of coastal landscapes, historic landmarks, beaches, forests, military sites, and wildlife habitats on both sides of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Stretching from southern San Mateo County through San Francisco and into Marin County, the recreation area encompasses more than 37 distinct park sites and over 130 miles of scenic hiking trails. It is also one of the most visited units of the National Park System, welcoming millions of visitors each year.

Visitors can explore a wide variety of landscapes and attractions, including the rugged Marin Headlands, Crissy Field, Lands End, Ocean Beach, Muir Beach, Fort Point, Alcatraz Island, and the Presidio.
