Mosquito Flat Backpacker Overview
Mosquito Flat Backpacker campground has 10 campsites (6 with a table and fire ring) and is located next to Rock Creek in the Inyo National Forest. This is a special one night only campground designed for backpackers on the night before embarking on their backpack trip. The campsites are a short walk (about 300 feet) from the parking lot. All sites are first-come first-served (no reservations).
The campground is located is at the end of Rock Creek Road at an elevation of about 10,100 feet. Exit Highway 395 at Tom’s Place (approximately 13 miles south of Mammoth Lakes, 30 miles north of Bishop). Follow Rock Creek Road (FS 12) to the end, about 10 miles. This road is closed in winter.
Mosquito Flat Backpacker is seasonal and generally open mid May to late October. Amenities include vault toilets and trash collection (dumpsters in parking lot). Food storage lockers are also available near the vault toilets. Potable (drinking) water is not available but you can filter from Rock Creek.
Area Recreation & Activities
Outdoor recreation in the area includes backpacking, hiking, fishing, photographer, stargazing and wildlife viewing.
There are also several other campgrounds in the area including Rock Creek Lake, Pine Grove, Upper Pine Grove, East Fork and others.
