Rock Creek Lake Overview
Rock Creek Lake campground is a beautiful family campground located between Rock Creek and Rock Creek Lake in the Sierra Nevada near Mammoth. The campground has 2 camping areas. Sites 1-13 are in the first area/loop and sites 14-26 are in the second area/loop. Check out our campground map (if you’re a Pro Member) for approximate locations of campsites.
There are 26 campsites available. Campsites 10-13 are RV sites and the parking spurs are about 30 feet long and 10 feet wide. These sites are relatively tight, but do have space for your RV or trailer and another vehicle (parked side by side). The rest are walk-to, tent-only campsites. Each of the tent-only campsites has a parking spur that’s about 10 feet wide by 20 feet long. Several of the walk-to sites require hiking 300+ feet. Some are located along the lake shore, while others are up next to the creek and in the forest. Each site also have a parking area, table, one 10’x10′ tent pad (most sites), food storage locker (typical bear box size 48″ x 30″ x 36″), fire ring and grate.
One group campsite is also available on the other side of the lake and close to the boat ramp.
Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and trash collection (dumpsters). There’s also a boat ramp, boat rentals and day-use area along the lake. Firewood is also available from the friendly camp host. Cell service is not available.
The nearest dump station is about 9 miles down the road and across the street from French Camp. Dump fees are included if you have a campground reservation at East Fork campground or any of the campgrounds in Rock Creek Canyon area.
Rock Creek Lake – Area Recreation
Outdoor activities include boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, backpacking, picnicking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. Power boats on the lake are limited to electric motors only.
Other campgrounds in the area include East Fork, Palisade, Big Meadow and Iris Meadow.

Hey there, which campsites are the best for being near that back beach of the lake? Hard to tell on the recreation.gov site. Not walk to campsite, close to the car? Thanks!
Does anyone have a map of the camp sites? There isnt one available recreation.gov and I cant find one online anywhere.

Had the pleasure staying at Rock creek campsite 10. The site is listed as an RV site but there is a spot to set up a tent. ⛺️ the site is slightly sloped but definitely manageable. We were able to set up a 6×6 tent without any issue. Site 10 is located right next to a trailhead so be prepared for hikers to be walking by. Not an issue though. We loved the site and loved staying at Rock Creek Lake.

The campsites that have tent pads are about 10’x10′, however the one in site #4 looks more like it is 10’x8′.
Thank you so much for the prompt reply. 10×8 does look like what I learned from the pictures and videos. It seems that #5 and #3 have tent pads that look a bit larger than #4. But both cannot beat the view from #4. Thanks again! Time to get a smaller tent!

Does anyone know how many tent pads per site? Is there room at site 2 for two tents? Perhaps one using the pad and one somewhere else? Could we do 2 large tents there?

Most campsites (#2 included) have one 10×10 tent pad area and there may be a little room (other than tent pad area) for a small 2-person tent. Campsite #2 has the 10’x 10′ tent pad area and that’s about it. Not sure the sizes of your two ‘large’ tents but I doubt both (if 4+ people) would fit in the tent pad area.
I’m looking at Site #24/25/26 and based on the pictures looks like Site #25 have no special tent pad platform area unlike the others. Does that mean we can setup put a bigger tent than a 10×10?
Additionally, is there areas nearby for the kids to go swimming or play in the river? I heard that we shouldn’t be in the lake.

Campsite #25 is one of our favorite sites at Rock Creek Lake. It’s large, level and private. It’s also about 60-70 feet from Rock Creek. The site does have a 10×10 tent pad. Not sure if you can go with a larger tent, probably not. The creek will be cold, but the kids may like splashing around in it. It really doesn’t have any swimming holes/areas. You are allowed to swim in Rock Creek Lake, but there are no designated swim areas / beaches. The water will be very cold and the lake bottom will have rocks, branches/sticks.
Will site 15 be big enough for a 12×12 tent?

The tent pad area looks to be about 15 feet by 20 feet so your 12×12 tent should fit fine! Have fun at beautiful Rock Creek Lake Campground.

If I book a tent site, 21 for example. Is it possible to sleep in a tent that goes in the bed of the truck? Or must the tent be at the site location only?

I think so but I’m not positive. Perhaps someone else can comment/confirm if it is okay to sleep in the truck bed.
Curious how far the walk from the parking spur is to either site #23 or #24 — any info on that? And, preference on which of those sites is more highly preferred?

From the parking area it’s about 225 feet to site #23 and 275 feet to site #24. Both sites are among our favorites in the campground but they’re a little more of a walk to get to than the others. I think you’d like either – fairly large camping area, closer to creek, nice tree shade and private.

Do you have any campsites that would accommodate 2 tents that are each 10’x10′? We are two couples each with a 10’x10′ tent. Looking at the photos, it looks like there might be enough space at site #23 or #25 but it is hard to tell. Can you offer any insight? Hoping to book a site ASAP. Thanks.

Campsites 14, 16, 22, 23 and 25 will work for two 10’x10′ tents, and sites 17 and 21 might also have room.

Thanks for the information! One other question. Is the bathroom near sites 23, 24 25 a portable outhouse, pit toilets or flush. I’m assuming the bathroom is near the parking area. Thanks!

Hi, I was planning an upcoming trip to Rock Creek as I was able to snag site #8. I was wondering if this site also had a 10’x10′ tent pad and potentially any extra room for a smaller tent. We were hoping to bring two tents and trying to figure out what sizes would fit in the campsite. Thank you!

Unfortunately site #8 is one of the campsites that does not have much room for a tent. Only a small tent will fit in the area next to the table. I’d say maybe about 5×8 feet. I’m pretty sure the site does not have a 10×10′ tent pad.
Is site #13 suitable for a small car and a tent?

Yes, a car and tent will work fine in campsite #13. Tent probably can’t be too big though (not enough room).
