Bandits Roost Overview
Bandits Roost Campground has 102 campsites and is located on the southern shore of W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir in the foothills of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. There are 85 sites with water and electric hookups, and 17 standard sites. Each site also has a gravel parking spur, table, BBQ pedestal, fire ring and grill. Most sites have good tree shade. Group camping is also available. Firewood is available to purchase from the camp host.
The campground is seasonal and usually open mid April to mid October. Amenities include potable (drinking) water, flush toilets, pit toilets, hot-water showers, trash collection (dumpsters) and an RV dump station. There’s also a boat ramp, boat trailer lot, swim beach, playground, basketball court and amphitheater. Cell service is good in the area.
Bandits Roost Campground – Area Recreation & Activities
Outdoor recreation in the area includes boating, kayaking, paddle-boarding, fishing, swimming, water sports, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking and wildlife viewing.
Visitors can also explore the historic towns of Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro, visit the W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir Visitor Assistance Center, enjoy scenic drives through the Blue Ridge foothills, or venture to nearby state parks and Blue Ridge Parkway attractions.
Warrior Creek Campground and Fort Hamby Park are also nearby.

I have been camping at Bandits Roost for 30+ years. It is my favorite campground. This year Marvin and his lovely wife are back as gate keepers. I have missed them for 6-7 years. The grounds here are well maintained and clean. Campsites are roomy and most are single sites. I wish I could give it more stars. Campers are considerate and trustworthy-at least that has always been my experience.
We have camped at Bandits Roost several times in the past 3 years. We usually get the same campsite #69 which is a great private back in that’s pretty level. This year we had to choose a different site. The campground map is not at all accurate either online or the one provided by the gate attendant. Our site 15 shares a 102 foot drive with site 14. These are not listed as buddy sites and no width dimension is under details online. The map shows nicely separated camping areas but this is not the case! The total width of both sites is about 35 ft. Site 15 utilities are right at site 14 front door . When we arrived, the leaves were thick on the ground and we could not see the edges of the individual sites. Looks like COVID has effected grounds maintenance. We have never been here with no leaves blown off the sites.
