Shoshone National Forest Wyoming

Shoshone National Forest Overview

Shoshone National Forest covers approximately 2.4 million acres in northwestern Wyoming and is one of the largest national forests in the US. The forest stretches from the Montana border south toward the Wind River Range and includes a remarkable variety of landscapes, from high alpine peaks and glaciers to sagebrush valleys, dense conifer forests, and dramatic mountain canyons. It also borders Yellowstone National Park on the west and includes portions of the Absaroka, Wind River, and Beartooth mountain ranges.

Shoshone National Forest – Recreation & Activities

Visitors can hike hundreds of miles of trails through forests, meadows, and alpine terrain. The North Fork of the Shoshone River corridor is particularly scenic, with access to mountain trails, wildlife viewing, fishing, and areas for camping. The forest also offers excellent opportunities for horseback riding, mountain biking, rock climbing, boating, and photography.

Fishing is popular in the forest’s numerous rivers, streams, and mountain lakes. Anglers can find trout in many of the cold, clear waters. Wildlife is abundant as well, with opportunities to see elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep, black bears, grizzly bears, and other Rocky Mountain species.

During winter, Shoshone National Forest becomes a destination for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and other snow-based activities. The higher elevations receive substantial snowfall, and some roads, campgrounds, and recreation sites close seasonally.

Camping is available at numerous developed campgrounds throughout the forest, as well as in dispersed camping areas. Developed campgrounds vary considerably in size and amenities.
