Six Rivers National Forest

Six Rivers National Forest California

Six Rivers National Forest Overview

Six Rivers National Forest is a rugged and scenic national forest in northwestern California, covering nearly one million acres between the Pacific Coast and the Klamath Mountains. Established in 1947, the forest takes its name from six major rivers that flow through the region: the Smith, Klamath, Trinity, Mad, Van Duzen, and Eel Rivers. The landscape ranges from lush river canyons and dense conifer forests to remote mountain ridges and wilderness areas.

The forest is known for its outstanding fishing, whitewater rafting, swimming holes, wildlife viewing, and more than 250 miles of hiking trails. Visitors can explore old-growth forests, scenic rivers, and several designated wilderness areas while enjoying a less crowded experience than many of California’s more famous national parks.

Camping in Six Rivers National Forest

Camping is one of the forest’s biggest attractions. The forest contains numerous developed campgrounds as well as opportunities for dispersed camping in many areas. Campgrounds range from primitive riverside sites to more developed facilities with drinking water, restrooms, and showers. The forest offers more than a dozen developed campgrounds spread across its various ranger districts.
