Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Overview

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is a 42,000-acre protected landscape in Northern California and located just west of Redding.

The centerpiece of the park is Whiskeytown Lake, a large, clear reservoir popular for swimming, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Around the lake, visitors find miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, including routes that lead to waterfalls, ridge viewpoints, and quiet forested canyons.

Camping here ranges from very developed (near beaches and marinas) to rugged and quiet creek-side sites. Most campgrounds also require careful food storage due to black bear activity. Summers can be hot, especially at lower elevations near the lake, while spring and fall offer the most comfortable camping conditions.
