White Mountain National Forest New Hampshire

White Mountain National Forest Overview

White Mountain National Forest is a vast and scenic national forest spanning eastern New Hampshire and western Maine in the heart of New England. Covering nearly 800,000 acres, the forest is renowned for its rugged mountain landscapes, dense hardwood and evergreen forests, crystal-clear rivers, and diverse recreational opportunities. It encompasses much of the famous White Mountains, including several of the highest peaks in the northeastern United States, such as Mount Washington.

Visitors to White Mountain National Forest can enjoy year-round outdoor recreation. During the warmer months, popular activities include hiking, camping, fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, wildlife viewing, and scenic driving along routes such as the Kancamagus Highway. The forest features hundreds of miles of hiking trails, including portions of the Appalachian Trail, leading to waterfalls, alpine summits, and remote wilderness areas.

Camping opportunities range from developed campgrounds with modern amenities to primitive backcountry sites. Visitors can choose from numerous campgrounds located near lakes, rivers, and mountain vistas, making the forest a popular destination for both tent campers and RV travelers. In winter, the forest transforms into a hub for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, snowmobiling, and winter hiking.

The forest is also rich in natural and cultural history. Its ecosystems support a wide variety of wildlife, including moose, black bears, white-tailed deer, and numerous bird species. Historic covered bridges, scenic notches, and mountain passes provide glimpses into the region’s heritage and enduring connection to outdoor recreation.
