Cleator Bend – Area & Recreation

The Willamette National Forest stretches for 110 miles along the western slopes of the Cascade Range. The landscape varies between high mountains, narrow canyons, and cascading streams. The Breitenbush River’s clean waters flow from snow melt in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness.

Some popular activities to do here and in the surrounding area include hiking, biking, and swimming. The Willamette National Forest has about 1,700 miles of trail. While many are in wilderness areas, a number of trails are low-elevation, easy-access trails for year-round hiking. The South Breitenbush Gorge Trail is three miles from the campground. Here, hikers can view the river passing through basalt narrows. Fishing is popular as well. Rainbow trout is the most common catch for anglers. In addition, Detroit Lake is about 30mins away. Detroit Lake provides a great opportunity for water recreation like boating, water skiing, and kayaking.

Other campgrounds that you might like are Breitenbush, Scorpion Creek, Fox Creek Group, Humbug, Elk Lake, Cove Creek, Santiam Flats, as well as Hoover.
