Humbug Campground Willamette National Forest Oregon
Humbug Overview
Humbug Campground is a quiet, riverside campground that has 21 sites in the Willamette National Forest. Also, it sits beside the beautiful Breitenbush River beneath Douglas-fir and cedar trees. Thick vegetation between the sites creates a peaceful and private setting. This campground is a great choice for campers who want a relaxing basecamp with easy access to hiking, fishing, and scenic drives.
Humbug campground is open from late April until late September. Drinking water, vault toilets, firewood, trash collection, as well as a campground host are available. There are no electrical hookups, showers, Wi-Fi, or sewer connections. Cell service is poor. Reservations are recommended during the busy summer season. However, a few first-come, first-served sites may be available. Bears occasionally visit the area, so store food properly and follow all campground regulations.
Humbug Campground can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. Some sites can have up to 8 guests and 1 vehicle. Other sites can have up to 12 guests and 2 vehicles. The max vehicle length ranges from 15ft to 99ft. Most sites have picnic tables, campfire rings with grills, and paved parking spurs.
Humbug Campground – Outdoor Recreation & Activities
The campground lies in the Willamette National Forest. It stretches for 110 miles along the western slopes of the Cascade Range. The landscape varies between high mountains, narrow canyons, and cascading streams. The Breitenbush River’s clean waters flow from snow melt in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness.
The Breitenbush River is the campground’s main attraction. Some popular activities to do here and in the surrounding area include hiking, biking, swimming, and fishing. The Willamette National Forest has about 1,700 miles of trail. While many are in wilderness areas, a number of trails are low-elevation, easy-access trails for year-round hiking. Fishing is popular as well. Rainbow trout is the most common catch for anglers. In addition, Detroit Lake is about 30 minutes away. Detroit Lake provides a great opportunity for water recreation like boating, water skiing, and kayaking.
The nearby Breitenbush Hot Springs retreat has natural hot springs and a peaceful forest setting. Adventurous visitors can also explore trails leading into the Mount Jefferson Wilderness or enjoy a scenic drive over the Santiam Pass.
Other campgrounds that you might like are Cleator Bend, Scorpion Creek, Fox Creek Group, Breitenbush, Elk Lake, Cove Creek, Santiam Flats, as well as Hoover.

Although an older campground, it is reasonably well kept, especially considering it doesn’t have a dedicated camp host. If you have a camper, don’t bother with site 11.
Many FCFS sites may lead to excessive traffic.
