Ochoco National Forest Oregon

Ochoco National Forest Overview

Ochoco National Forest encompasses more than 850,000 acres of scenic mountain landscapes, towering ponderosa pine forests, high-desert terrain, deep canyons, open meadows, and crystal-clear streams. Located just northeast of Prineville, the forest offers a quieter and less-crowded alternative to many of Oregon’s better-known outdoor destinations while providing outstanding opportunities for year-round recreation.

The forest is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from volcanic rock formations and rimrock cliffs to lush forests and wildflower-filled mountain meadows. Visitors can also explore three designated wilderness areas—Black Canyon, Bridge Creek, and Mill Creek Wilderness—as well as sections of the Crooked River National Grassland, which is managed alongside the forest. Scenic drives reveal breathtaking overlooks, while trails lead to landmarks such as Lookout Mountain, Steins Pillar, and Big Summit Prairie.

Ochoco National Forest Camping

Camping is one of the forest’s most popular activities, with a variety of developed campgrounds and abundant dispersed camping opportunities available throughout the forest. Campgrounds range from lakeside settings to secluded forest retreats, many providing easy access to hiking trails, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Developed campgrounds include Walton Lake, Ochoco Divide Group Site and Ochoco Forest Camp.
