Contorta Flat Overview
Contorta Flat campground has 18 campsites in a forested area right next to Crescent Lake at the top of the Willamette Pass.
Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Each site also has a parking spur (rannging in length from 16 ft. to 40 ft., a table, fire ring and grill. Some sites are tent-only. There are several campsites right along the water. Pets are okay. There is 1 double site (#5) that can have up to 12 guests. All other sites can have up to 6 guests.
Contorta Flat campground is seasonal and generally open late May to mid October. Reservations are accepted through late May and first-come first-served in October. Amenities include vault toilets and trash collection (dumpsters). Potable (drinking) water is not available. Cell service is poor. Nearby Crescent Lake Resort also offers lodging and a general store. Supplies and equipment rentals are also available there. Some close by RV dump stations include Gordy’s Truck Stop (47mi northeast), LaPine State Park (52mi northeast), and Thousand Trails Bend-Sunriver RV Campground (56mi northeast).
Contorta Flat Campground – Area & Recreation & Activities
Cresent Lake sits in a glacier basin east of the towering Cascade Mountain Range. It boasts brilliant blue-green water and sandy beaches. A forest of lodgepole pine provides the backdrop to the area. Visitors can explore wilderness areas, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Also, there is around 1,600 miles of trails that within the Deschutes National Forest and the adjacent Ochoco National Forest. Wildlife found in the area includes deer, native fish, and migratory birds.
Some popular activities to do here include boating, fishing, and swimming. Also, there is hiking, mountain biking, as well as winter sports during the snowy season. The Summit Lake Trail is popular among hikers and mountain bikers, offering excellent views of Diamond Peak across Crescent Lake. Crescent Lake Snowpark offers a base camp for exciting winter excursions. The Summit Lake Trail is open to snowmobiling.
In addition, Bend, Oregon is about 1.5 hrs away and offers some really cool experiences. The Lava Lands Visitor Center as well as the Newberry National Volcanic Monument are awesome to visit. Also, people enjoy traveling the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, known as Oregon’s Highway in the Sky. It climbs into the clouds on a 66-mile drive through the Cascade Range, weaving past snowy peaks and alpine lakes.
Other campgrounds you might like are Spring, Simax Group, Whitefish Horse, Contorta Point, Crescent Creek, Princess Creek, Sheep Bridge, as well as Black Canyon.
