Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area Overview

Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area is a vast and scenic outdoor destination in northeastern Washington.  The recreation area surrounds Lake Roosevelt, a long reservoir formed by the Grand Coulee Dam. It is known for its wide-open shorelines, desert-meets-forest landscapes, and rich cultural history.

The lake’s fluctuating water levels create a dynamic shoreline with sandy beaches, rocky coves, and secluded bays. It’s a very popular destination for boaters, anglers, swimmers, and paddlers. There are also a number of access points, marinas, and campgrounds along the reservoir, providing both developed amenities and quieter, more primitive experiences.

The area also has deep cultural significance for local Native American tribes, including the Colville Confederated Tribes and Spokane Tribe. Before the dam was built, the Columbia River supported important fisheries and settlements. The creation of Lake Roosevelt in the 1940s dramatically reshaped the landscape and communities, and interpretive sites throughout the recreation area share these stories.
