Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Overview

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is a vast and remarkably diverse national forest spanning approximately 6.3 million acres across most of Nevada and portions of eastern California. Unlike many national forests, it is made up of numerous large, non-contiguous sections spread across the Great Basin, Sierra Nevada, Ruby Mountains, Spring Mountains, and other mountain ranges. It is the largest national forest in the lower 48 states.

The forest offers a striking mix of landscapes, from high desert basins and sagebrush country to alpine lakes, rugged mountain peaks, deep canyons, pine and aspen forests, and expansive wilderness areas. Its remote setting and enormous size provide abundant opportunities for visitors seeking both developed recreation and solitude.

Camping is one of the best ways to experience Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The forest offers dozens of developed campgrounds, along with dispersed camping areas, group camping facilities, and horse camps. Campgrounds vary considerably depending on their location and elevation. Some provide basic amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water, while more primitive sites may have few or no services.
