Shasta-Trinity National Forest Overview
Shasta-Trinity National Forest is the largest national forest in California, encompassing more than 2.2 million acres of rugged mountains, volcanic landscapes, pristine rivers, alpine lakes, and dense forests in Northern California. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the forest stretches from the slopes of Mount Shasta to the remote wilderness of the Trinity Alps, offering some of the most diverse outdoor recreation opportunities in the state.
The forest contains five designated wilderness areas, including the renowned Trinity Alps Wilderness and Mount Shasta Wilderness. Elevations range from approximately 1,000 feet near Shasta Lake to 14,179 feet atop Mount Shasta, creating a remarkable variety of ecosystems and scenery. More than 6,000 miles of rivers and streams flow through the forest, supporting abundant wildlife and excellent fishing opportunities.
Shasta-Trinity National Forest Camping
Camping is one of the most popular activities in the forest. Visitors can choose from dozens of developed campgrounds located along lakes, rivers, and mountain valleys, as well as dispersed camping opportunities on many forest roads. Popular camping areas are found around:
- Shasta Lake
- Trinity Lake
- Lake McCloud
- Lewiston Lake
- The Trinity Alps backcountry
- The Mount Shasta region
Campgrounds range from large family-friendly facilities with potable water, boat launches, and RV sites to secluded forest campgrounds ideal for tent camping. Group campgrounds are also available around Trinity Lake and other recreation areas.
Recreation Opportunities
The national forest offers uyear-round outdoor activities including, camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, boat, rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, horseback riding, mountaineering and wildlife viewing. Winter snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing and snowshoeing are also popular.
